Gum Disease

Gum Disease Overview

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a common condition that arises from poor oral hygiene. When oral care is neglected, harmful bacteria accumulate in the mouth, leading to infection and inflammation of the gums. If left untreated, this condition can spread to the bone supporting the teeth, potentially leading to tooth decay and other serious complications.

Stages and Symptoms of Gum Disease

Gum disease progresses through three stages, each with distinct symptoms:

  1. Gingivitis – The earliest stage of gum disease, gingivitis is often painless and may go unnoticed. However, it can be reversed with proper treatment. If untreated, gingivitis can advance to more severe stages.
  2. Periodontitis – At this stage, the infection spreads deeper into the gums and bone, causing loosening of the teeth. Periodontitis is irreversible and can result in tooth loss if not properly managed.

Common symptoms of gum disease to watch for include:

  • Bleeding gums, especially when brushing
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Receding gums
  • Pain or discomfort while eating
  • A bad taste in the mouth
  • Loose teeth
  • Tender or swollen gums

Treatment for Gum Disease

Initially, dentists may recommend non-surgical treatments, such as scaling and root planing, a deep cleaning procedure to remove plaque and tartar from below the gumline. In more advanced cases, treatments such as laser gum surgery or periodontal surgery may be necessary to restore gum health. For individuals who have lost teeth due to gum disease, dental implants may be recommended to replace missing teeth.

Preventing Gum Disease

The best way to prevent gum disease is by practicing good oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing regularly and scheduling routine dental checkups. A balanced diet rich in nutrients also supports gum health and helps prevent infection.
